Higher Education Is Failing, but There’s Hope for a Freer Future

If you’ve been following higher-ed news lately, you’re probably aware that the university – once one of mankind’s most effective institutions for instilling the value of tolerance, unlocking critical thinking and preparing young people for the labor market – is becoming increasingly hostile to liberty.

From “trigger warnings” and “safe spaces” to “hate speech is not free speech,” there is a worrying trend towards intolerance and fanaticism on campus. It would seem that the days of pro-liberty student-led activism, like the Free Speech Movement of the 1960s, are long behind us. Worse still, colleges are increasingly producing students who are ill-equipped to thrive in the modern workplace, both in terms of technical skills and the ability to handle criticism or opinions with which they disagree. Instead, thousands upon thousands of students  aredrowning in debt (recently reached over $1.5 trillion) with degrees they can’t use, all while looking to government as a solution for their inability to navigate the labor market.

Bleak as the situation may seem right now, the future of freedom depends on our ability to cultivate the next generation of leaders who can ensure the continuing spread of the ideas of liberty. This is where Students For Liberty (SFL) comes in: our leadership and pre-professional programs continually prove that, with the right training and resources, the fight for freedom on campus can be won. We at SFL have been tackling this most pressing challenge of educating and empowering students dedicated to liberty for over a decade.

Founded in 2008, Students For Liberty (SFL) is a 501(c)(3) student-led, pro-liberty organization that identifies, trains and resources students to cultivate them into effective advocates of liberty on their campuses, and eventually, in society-at-large as alumni. We cultivate student leaders through our campus programs and regional and international events, with over 65,000 students and alumni attending our over 1,400 events in the last fiscal year. Over the last decade, SFL has blossomed into the largest pro-liberty student organization in the world.

Although it started in the USA, SFL has inspired the creation of chapters in some of the most repressive states in the world, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Belarus, and Venezuela. With a decade of experience under our belt, and over 2,000 new leaders trained in the last year alone, SFL is a proven investment. Our CEO Dr. Wolf von Laer and some of our most impactful student leaders will be at FreedomFest July  11-14 to showcase why continued investment in student leadership is the key to increasing the spread and adoption of the ideas of liberty in all areas of society. You’ll have two opportunities to hear Dr. von Laer speak on the future of liberty at 11.10am on July 12 and 11.00am on July 14.
